Bellevue murder; Bond set for suspect
The body of 31-year-old
Nicole VanderHeyden was found near a field on the south side of Hoffman Road in
Bellevue on Saturday afternoon. The identity of her body was confirmed through
the completion of an autopsy on Monday.
The boyfriend of
VanderHeyden, 34-year-old, Douglass Detrie was taken into custody for the
suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide on Wednesday afternoon. Evidence
has been found. Brown County District Attorney, David Lasee, states that the
evidence pieced together may be enough to charge Detrie. Foot prints of dirt

the couple’s home. A foot print was also found on VanderHeyden’s body, and the
print matched a pair of shoes that belong to Detrie. Prosecutors are waiting on
test results of the bloodstain samples. A $1 million bond has been set for Detrie. Detrie is scheduled to be back in court on June 2nd. Meanwhile, friends and family continue for mourn the loss of VanderHeyden.

Clinton’s emails continue to be investigated
Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, defended
her email usage while in office on Thursday. Clinton stated that the rules
regarding emails were unclear.
Clinton initially
stated that she did not want to inconvenience herself by carrying two different
phones. Clinton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer
that she didn’t think there would be an issue using her personal server because
she knew other past secretaries that did the same. On Thursday, Clinton
explained that she was not comfortable using a computer to read her emails. Former
State Department administrative official, Lewis Lukens stated that he accommodated
Clinton’s needs by setting up a desktop computer in her office, but it was not
connected to the department’s system. A State Department Inspector General report was released this week stating that Clinton failed to follow the rules and inform the department staff in regards to her use of her private email.
Clinton stated that if she could go back and do things differently, she would. She also claimed that she believes voters are looking at a bigger picture such as her life and what she has to offer if she were president.

Obama
pays tribute to the victims of Hiroshima bombing
President of the
United States, Barack Obama visited the site of the Hiroshima, Japan bombing on
Friday. Obama is the first sitting president to visit the site after the World
War II attack.
President
Obama called for a world without war, and more specifically, a world without
nuclear weapons. A brigade brought the president to the Hiroshima Peace Park
and to the site’s museum where he placed a wreath on the monument’s arch.
Obama
did not apologize for the actions of the U.S., but he did pay tribute to the
victims of the bombings. Obama spoke to two survivors of the bombings and
hugged one of them.

140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 74,000 died in the bombing of Nagasaki

Amanda,
ReplyDeleteWe had the same local news story for this week. This was such a tragic event. I live about 5 minutes from where the murder took place, and I can honestly say it has impacted the community. She was well respected and loved. She was a mother of three, and a substitute teacher in the Green Bay School District. She will definitely be missed. I am grateful the police are working hard to get answers. Your post was very descriptive and covered a lot about what happened. Very newsworthy for this area!
Sorry about my citations, everyone! I will have to adjust these for an easier read!
ReplyDeleteI had trouble with mine too! They seemed to have gotten messed up when I copy/pasted from a word doc onto the website.
DeleteAmanda,
ReplyDeleteI also had the same local news story for this week and I couldn't agree more with the selection. I also agree with what Elisabeth commented above, that it is very newsworthy for this area. Homicide is almost always a contender for top story anywhere, but in a place like Green Bay it is all the more shocking because it is so rare, not to mention the shear brutality and tragedy of what the victim and her family have suffered.
We also had the same story for top world story. I had a hard decision to make about the unfolding Zika virus story and President Obama visiting Hiroshima. I decided on the latter because I couldn't pass up how historic an event this was and somber of an occasion it was. Clearly the wounds of war have not yet been healed, if that is even possible.
Well done!
Troy
Amanda, fantastic choices on stories for the week. They definitely catch your attention and have relevance in many aspects. Looks like you are already aware of positives/improvements on your stories. You have a smooth writing style and look forward to reading more of your work!
ReplyDeleteYour local story matched the story I used and your national story was related to the story I used; I used Obama lifting the arms embargo. Your choice of national news is relevant as many people are caught up in the whirlwind of politics. There is prominence in both your national and international stories. We all know Hillary and Obama. Your local news story impacts the local community.
