New Analysis 3

Hobart murder suspect held on $5 million bond

Jacob Cayer is held at a $5 million cash bond after appearing in court on Thursday afternoon. The 26-year-old man is accused of a double homicide that took place in Hobart this week.

According for Fox 11, police say they found 25-year-old Sabrina Teague stabbed to death in her backyard. Police say they found 63-year-old Heesun Teague dead in her home. Joel Kennedy was also stabbed in the chest and arms, but he is expected to survive the wounds.

According to WBAY, Cayer was found hiding in a wooded area near the property. Cayer will appear back in court on June 17.

Proximity: The murder took place in the local community. Many citizens were impacted by the murder. If the story was not a local, the proximity would not make the story newsworthy. There are people murdered every day in other states that our local community is not notified about. Because this is a local story, proximity matters.

Immediacy: The victims of the murder and the court appearance happened earlier in the day. This makes the information immediate. If the information was given days later, the story would not be immediate.

Orlando shooting, deadliest in U.S. history

Orlando, Florida- Omar Mateen murdered more than 50 people and injured at least 53 people at Pulse Nightclub on June 12 around 2 a.m. ET. Mateen carried a pistol and an assault rifle into the nightclub.

29-year-old Mateen was killed after a three-hour standoff with law enforcement, according to NBC. Orlando law enforcement told NBC that Mateen made a 911 call before the attack pledging his allegiance with ISIS. Mateen’s ex-wife thought he had a mental illness, CNN.

According to CNN, the attack is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11. Authorities said they haven’t found any accomplices.

Impact: This story impacts the country because it was considered a terrorist attack among Americans. This has been classified as the second largest terror attack on America next to 9/11.

Emotions: The event made many Americans angry and sad. This can be proven by the amount of memorial services that were held in honor of the victims of the attacks. People in different states held services to grieve over the loss of the victims. Makeshift memorials were also made to express the loss of the victims.

Conflict: The attack has also sparked conflict about gun control. Both sides of the political spectrum are arguing about whether this attack had to do with gun usage. Democrats believe that there needs to be a tighter control on guns, and Republicans believe that this attack was not about guns but about the war with ISIS.

New arrest of Brussel bombing attacks

Brussels, Belgium- Police arrested a man in suspicion of the connection to the airport and metro system bombings on March 22.

According to BBC, the man was identified by prosecutors as 31-year-old Ali E.H.A.

Prosecutors said no added information would be given so to not impede on the investigation of the March 22 attacks, according to The New York Times.

Belgian media states the man is held at Nivelles prison, according to BBC. He is believed to be the 10th suspect of the attacks.

Immediacy: The original attack happened on March 22, but the new arrest happened on June 10, 2016. This makes the news story immediate information. Belgian broadcasts informed the audience once the man was arrested.

Impact: The story impacts many people that were affected by the terrorist attacks. Friends and family member were injured or died in the attacks. Both direct and indirect victims should know who is being punished for their crimes.

  1. You definitely hit the nail on the head with these top stories. Well done. We had the same local news story and we have the same information. Just some sick people in this world. It is hard to know who to trust. I just don't understand how someone feel entitled to take another humans life for no reason. It does not make sense to me. My heart breaks reading all of these stories over and over again. I read them online, and now on all of our classmates posts. I wish we had more positive stories than negative. I am so shaken up from the horrific stories that happened in this month. Think about it, all of the stories we have posted on here occurred in the past few weeks. That is so scary!

  2. Amanda,

We had two of the same stories for this analysis. I couldn't agree more with your selections. I was going to say "great" stories but they're actually horrible stories. What they are are great selections.

I think you did a really good job presenting all the information impartially, in a very organized, easy to read fashion.

    Good job this summer semester!

    1. Thank you! Since you did the same, I would agree with you. These are terrible stories, but it's our job as educators and students to make sure people know about these tragic topics.

I enjoyed your pieces this semester as well! Wishing you the best!
