News Analysis- Week 2

Suspected shooter causes school closing

The search for the man that shot an Oconto County Sheriff on Tuesday continues. The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning at Pine Acres Golf Course in the Town of Abrams.

The golf course was vandalized multiple times recently. The deputy saw a suspicious person walking near the golf course. The deputy asked the person to stop, but the person ran away. The deputy chased him. The man turned and shot at the deputy, but the deputy was missed and kept chasing the runner.

Oconto Falls School District decided to cancel classes for Abrams Elementary on Tuesday because of the ongoing situation.

This news story is considered newsworthy because this situation happened in a local community, and it impacted many people around the area that the incident took place. People that lived in the area had to figure out where to send their children since school was closed, and it places a concern for the community that a shooter is on the loose because people are not sure if the man will shoot again.

UCLA gunman’s car found

A car was found matching the description of the UCLA gunman’s vehicle on June 3. The car was found two days after the shooting.

According to Los Angeles Police Department, 2003 gray Nissan Sentra with a Minnesota license plate was found on Washington Place in Culver City.

Mainak Sarkar was identified as the gunman. Sarkar drove from his home in Minneapolis to the UCLA campus and shot William S. Klug, one of his former professors multiple times before turning the gun on himself. Sarkar also murdered his estranged wife, Ashely Hasti before leaving for UCLA.

According to Minneapolis Police Department, Sarkar had a “kill list” with the name of the professor he killed, his wife, and another professor. The second professor was not on campus the day of the shooting is unharmed.

The story is newsworthy because it is relevant to all of the United States. There are so many school shootings and threats, that all schools need to be aware of what is going on not only in their community but across the country. Whenever someone loses their life to a gunman, many people suffer. Things like this could happen to our community, so we should all be saddened by the event.

The River Seine reaches high levels

Landmarks and metro stations are forced to close after the River Seine in Paris reaches its highest levels since 1982. The river burst its banks on Wednesday, and as of Friday, the river has reached 20 feet.

The Louvre and Orsay museums were shut down for the day to move valuable art pieces to higher floors to prevent destruction. Multiple metro stations were also forced to close because the river flooded into the streets.

According to the industry association AFA, the flood could cost French insurance companies over 600 million euros. Fifteen people have died from the flooded river, and many were advised to leave their homes.

The article is newsworthy because the river has reached highest levels since 30 years ago. This makes the situation interesting, but for Parisians, the situation is devastating. Now only do people have to leave their homes, others have actually died because of the flood. There is also a concern for the art in the museums. Officials have to make sure art is secure and away from the water, or else the artwork will be destroyed. This is also financial issue for France because the damage could cost over 600 million euros. This will impact France’s economy.

  1. I also chose the same story for my local brief. You had clear and concise information that was able to get across all the important facts of the incident. I connected a lot with your explanation of your story choice because I live 10 minutes away from where this happened and those were some of the thoughts in my head and that a lot of people on my Facebook page had.

  2. Amanda,

Wonderful news stories. Your local and national seem to be very similar. It is extremely difficult to read stories like this, but you did a fabulous job writing about them and keeping the facts in without expressing too much of your own emotions.

In addition, I wrote about the UCLA shooting as well. We both incorporated the same information, just in different styles. I really enjoyed reading yours.

All of your stories were top news stories for the week! In addition I agree with Jen, you have very good explanations for the choices you made this week.

    Well Done!

    1. I try to keep my style consistent. It helps when writing multiple stories at a time. Once I get the fact, I just try to give the most important information. I struggle with "getting to the point", so this type of writing helps me.

  4. Amanda-

Great choices! I found the first story to be unfortunate and scary; however, I'm glad the shooter missed the deputy.

You have great writing style, and as Jen and Elisabeth said, your explanations are very valid and interesting.

  5. You used a good range of stories for your articles. A local shooting with school closure, the UCLA story continued and then the flooding in Paris. All of these stories are important on some level. I used a murder related story for my local, and I too used a UCLA continued story. I focused on his murdered wife.
The highest levels for Paris's Seine River in over 30 years is also newsworthy.

    1. I thought it was interesting and at the same time, scary! I hope everyone ended up staying safe during this flood. I also hope all of the valuable, historic art was moved to higher ground without being destroyed.
